Miss Information blames Orville Redenbacher

It’s summer. The library is busy. In spite of this the wait to get on to an Internet computer is only about 5 minutes. That this is an interminably long wait for most people puzzles Miss Information. A typical conversation goes like this:

Twitchy customer: Can I use a computer?
Miss Information: All the computers are in use right now. I’ll book you an appointment. It’s usually just a 5 minute wait.
Twitchy customer: Don’t you have anything sooner? I needed it right away.
Miss Information offers to stab the kid on terminal 21 watching the old episodes of the Price is Right. It would free up a computer quickly but the vultures and maggots might be a bit distracting.

When did 5 minutes become a long time? Miss Information has waited longer than 5 minutes for many things—Mr Right, enlightenment, the end of Stairway to Heaven, etc.
It isn’t that long. Read a book.

I love the people who storm out of the library in a huff after being told it will be a few minutes before there will be a free computer. Inevitably, a computer will open up by the time they're just far enough away for me not to be able to call them back.

I'm not exactly the religious-minded sort but I have to say...
AMEN, sister... Amen.

Ironically, the person who needs a computer "right away!" is also going to watch old episodes of the Price is Right.

Do you also see the 20-somethings who wish you would boot off the kids "just playing games"? And then you notice the 20-something is MySpace'ing?

People don't read books while they wait, that would be too logical.
I'll try the stabbing technique next time we have a 1/2 wait for computer time, thanks for the idea.

oh, man, do I hear you all. What is with the assumption of the natural given right of Internet use NOW, and if not, its just fine to verbally abuse the closest staff person?
